Sher202020 Hi Phil, I just
Sher202020 Hi Phil, I just watched your video. I agree with you, many parents of kids w/autism feel the ways you described. I know I have and do. Besides having a son with autism, I work as a therapist with elementary school students who are on the spectrum. We inservice parents of kids with autism regarding controlling their childrens' behavior, social skills, play. etc. But I believe the professionals need to hear what it is truly like to be in our shoes. I hear my coworkers often saying things like "Why don't the parents follow thru?" or "Why in the world are these people torturing their kids with these therapies/special diets/supplements?" "Why can't the parents be more consistant (ie be as professional and therefore effective as we are)?"
I would love to have them take my place for 24 hours and parent my son. I think it would radically change their perception of us parents. All the expertise in the world won't help our kids unless those who work with them have compassion for them and us. Wouldn't that make a great training workshop for special ed teachers and therapists and administrators? - here's what my experience has been from the time my child was born, diagnosed, up until now.
I look forward to your next video. Sher
