JET TRAVOLTA DIES AT 16

Cindy's picture

I just heard it on the evening news. Jet Travolta had a massive seizure =( (by the way for those of you who dont know he also had autism).

I was reading an article

I was reading an article that Kelly Preston claimed, in an interview a few years ago, that son Jett was "cured" by using L. Ron Hubbard's methods for treating diseases and did not need medication for his seizures.

Hi Cindy,

Here is a link to one story. I think this one is in the LA Times:

Thanks Perz. I just read on

Thanks Perz. I just read on Yahoo news OMG that he hit his head on the bath tub. I like Travolta but according to what I heard
Jett wasnt on medication because they're Scientologist. No disrespect to any religion but that pisses me off for a child to die so
young because his parents wont medicate him ugh. Apparently he had a seizure in the bathroom and fell & hit his head on the
tub. Marcel is on anti seizure meds (two different pills) and because of it if he does happen to have a seizure it should be mild
and not a grandmal or SEVERAL grandmals like he had March 25th of this year.

Here is a link to some of the side-effects of quite a few anti-convulsants.

I noted that there are many more side-effects than what was posted at this link, but it's a good start for anyone wanting to research it. Again, it's a tough decision to make. If our child dies because of a seizure yet has indeed been taking the anti-convulsant(s) as prescribed, there would be internet posts expressing anger at the parent for risking it with these dangerous meds too. So what's one to do? It's a tough one. I know doctors do not gofor cures, they treat symptoms. They work hard to avoid cures and when cures are found, for example cancer, they use propaganda to discount it and call it quackery. There's too much money to be lost by discovering cures.

Firstly,
In the interveiws that I saw on this topic with Kelly was that they were helping him with Scientology, not that he was cured. I never heard any such claim and have subscribed to updates on Jett via google and a few other search engines since the beginning. She said she had started a parent education program about the toxic effects of many commercial carpet cleaners as that was what they had strongly suspected was at the source of his then diagnosis.

In regard to choosing against seizure medication, I was in agreement myself. I have done therapeutic tutoring for over thirty years and have been connected up to information regarding the adverse effects of these meds. I have seen kids have seizures even while taking anti-seizure meds - which in fact can greatly increase frequency and intensity of seizures along with other side effects. Many kids have died having a seizure, even while on anti-seizure medication. Others have died directly from the medication side effects. There is a lot of information out there on natural remedies for seizures, some that I know do help and others that do not. I'm sure many do very little, but the research is worth it.

It's very difficult to decide which way to go and each parent has to make that very tough decision and pray it's is the right one.

Seizure disorders like

John H.'s picture

Seizure disorders like Autism are not an exact science so yes everyone needs to do their due diligence and research on what they think is right for their child, I know in our case we did not go with the conventional med because of known side effects but went with a proven med that had less side effects and up unitl recently had great success with it. If you are it any way condoning not putting a person with a serious seizure disorder on a treatment you are doing your clients and now the general public on this blog a disservice. I think you may need to live the life of a someone to deals with this on a daily basis before you render a opinion on this.

Having a son with Autism and a seizure disorder this story hit me hard, I fear my son waking up in the middle of the night having a seizure similarly to Jett and all that happened to the Travolta's happening to us because that is real life for me and my wife. While there is is alot of information about natural remedies out there, there is very little proof of them working long term which is what someone needs because typically like Autism seizures area lifetime disorder and never completely cured.

horses4autism I don't

I don't believe I said anything to the effect that a child who has seizures should not be treated. Whether the treatment is medicinal OR natural (meaning natural remedies that the body produces readily when nutritionally fit), there are no definite cures for every case or any case until it happens. Parent to parent tips and experience shared has seemed to provide enough evidence for parents provided the parent researches in depth enough to wade through the information and come out able to see the difference between real and fake posts and between improvement in health and reduction of seizures, as opposed to reduction of seizures and side-effects with some deteriorization of health. My greatest concern is that individuals who are well aware of the fact that a particular medicine is known to not cure and is known to increase frequency or magnitude of seizures and is known to have many other adverse side effects, will still push that medicine or its like to untrained parents while putting down health 'building' treatments in the form of diet and supplements, even when so many parents report a decrease in seizures and improved health. The information is out there in the words of parents who have tried different things. I have read and heard stories of kids having increased seizures from the anti-seizure meds. To me, that is very scary. Each way is scary. I've had parents sharing their lives with me for thirty years. I know what they go through and have seen and heard enough to form an opinion that I can trust and share. In my therapeutic tutoring, I never tell parents what to do. I simply direct them to sources that have shared success and let them decide for themselves. I do feel for parents and my position doesn't wane when a parent tells me that I do not know what they go through. I am saying only what I'm saying and should not be accused of saying something I did not say.

In regard to choosing

In regard to choosing against seizure medication, I was in agreement myself.

This is the part of your post that lead me to comment the way I did if I took it out of context I apologize but I still read it as if you were talking to a parent you would recommend against medication. I see what your saying about you would rather people go the natural route but that may not be an option for some folks or it may not work for some people as well. Being that my son is older now we have tried many different ...I guess you would call them holistic or natural treatment and they did nothing for us it made him ill and because he has alway been a big kid all of the doses were bigger and like I said made him ill.

Here is my issues with folks like yourself even though you may not think you are you are seen as a person that is empowered by your knowledge and position to be in a position of power in parents eyes so there are parents out there that in lieu of doing their own research will just take the word of a person that they deem is the atuhority in their life, this could be a teacher, thearpist, doctor, celebrity. Parent to preant networking is a great thing as long as we don't have an agenda, I personally am of the opinion that if it helps you child and you want to share that success please do it could help another person or at least make someone think about other solutions out there but there are people out there like I said with agendas and that can be just as detrimental as no information. If your agenda is the natural way thats fine but I am hoping that you are balancing your advice by quantifying that you are not a medical doctor and that parents should seek out opinions from the medical fiels as well.

It may not sound like it but I do applaud what you do, horses have done amazing things for our kids and it is a beautiful thing to see that connection when it is made between the animal and the child. My son does not care for large animals so this was not an option for us his fear was felt not only by him but the animal and it was going to turn into a bad situation for both so we decided against it, he is a water baby and his therapy is at the beach in the ocean where he is at peace and his happiest. Please keep up the great work that you do with our kids and just because I don't see eye to eye with you on the topic of seizure meds I do have huge respect for what you do and the happiness you bring.
