We recently tried the GF CF Diet last month exclusively, the whole family for two weeks recommended by an allergy specialist. We have been loosely following the diet with our 9 year old autistic daughter for the past two years. It’s a tough regime to stick with around holidays and birthdays. The following is a list of experiences our family had on this diet.
1. Nuts became our snack food and sometimes lunch for our son (he was picky) so when you eat a lot of nuts you can’t “go”. Constipation beyond belief, can you say hemorrhoids!
2. When you go on this diet you are trying to eliminate yeast in your system, where does this go you ask? It’s the one day you are loose or you throw it up .
3. We tracked our weight each day my husband lost 3 pounds in one day overall he lost 9 pounds our autistic daughter only lost 3 pounds over all and she was the one needing to lose the weight. I stayed the same, but our 7 year old son (who is not autistic) started looking like a concentration camp victim, he lost 5 of his 59 pounds!
4. About day 4 both my husband and son were complaining about their sides hurting at about 2:00am my husband woke up in a fetal position moaning in pain. He had to run to the bathroom and take a hot bath, he thought he was passing a kidney stone. Who knows what that was about? The Dr couldn’t tell…
5. Day 9 the school nurse got involved, our son said he felt “weird” and the nurse mentioned he looked pale. When I picked him up his lips were dried and crusty, his eyes were baggy and he was very pale. The Dr recommended that I not tell the teachers what we were doing to see if they would report BETTER BEHAVIOR. Great what was I to say to Nurse Ratchet?
More notes from the Autism diet later…
