Hi! You don't accept private messages (which is weird, because I'm sure I PM'd you before, so maybe Admin needs to fix a bug on the site here), so I'll just post this note to you:

Hello! I've been meaning to write to you! When I was at that conference at Stanford, I started chatting with a lady who has a 20 yr old son who has Aspergers. She said that back in the day, her son was toe walking and doing all sorts of things that were definite clues, but the pediatricians told her that her son would grow out of it! Her son's diagnosis was confirmed by half of the doctors they saw, but not the other half. Anyway, I told her about you and wrote your blog info down. I told her about the birthday party thing and about how well your son is doing. She was very interested to hear that your son has progressed well enough for driving and moving out! I don't know if she'll ever write to you, but maybe she is a silent blog fan (or maybe she lost the slip of paper).

She said that her sister was definitely on the spectrum. But her parents hadn't realized that and just blamed the girl for being socially awkward and clumsy. Also, she said that she was 32 and her physicist husband was 40 when they married, so she thinks that she and her husband passed on some "autistic" traits. Actually, the conference sort of confirmed that theory, that certain types of people tend to marry later. The conference actually bolstered that older-parent-autism-age theory. Wow, I was going to post that, but I've been so scatterbrained lately getting ready for my road trip. Plus my mom-in-law is visiting! Great timing on her part, huh? She's sweet though.

The "older parent" theory is

The "older parent" theory is one that really does not make any sense to me.  Back in the 19th Century (when autism was unheard of) most men were in their late 30s and 40s when they got married (they had to acquire enough property first in order to get married).  They did usually marry much younger women, who started having children right away, often in their teens.  However, families were large and (if they did not die young) women continued to have children for many, many years - often well into their 40s.  If autism was caused by "older" genes, I think it would have been even more prevalent back then and recognizably something to do with the youngest children in the family.  The stats don't support this, so I don't buy into this particular theory.

Hi Todd, Yep, I had figured

Hi Todd,

Yep, I had figured that out with my original experimenting.  I was trying originally to reset my notifications settings since I was tired of logging in just to see if I had messages, wound up eliminating the whole box, and then couldn't seem to get it to change back.  What what I was originally msising was that a person has to "submit" at the bottom of the profile page on which the change is one.  I was flipping between the pages of the profile before "submitting" so the settings were going back to the way they were before.

I think I've got it now.  I am an inherently impatient computer user and an impatient reader, though, so even though I know something, it won't necessarily mean that I go through all the steps each time.  No guarantees that I won't mess up again from time to time.  Hopefully, everyone will just learn to luv me as I am - lol.

Haha, the old hidden submit

Haha, the old hidden submit button problem. Yeah almost every page on the site requires you to submit to save changes.

Remember, you can always contact me if you get stuck on something. Don't be shy!!

Hi, Sorry about the private

Perseverence's picture

Hi,

Sorry about the private messages thing.  I was messing with my profile the other day trying to figure out the different settings and I "lost" my inbox.  I think I have re-enable private messages now, but still have no inbox on my list on the left edge of the screen - so I don't know if you tried to send me a message whether I would be able to collect it.  Post here if you do send me one and I'll try to collect it.

It took some more messing

It took some more messing around, but I seem to have recovered my inbox now.
