TRICKS

Cindy's picture

By now most everybody knows that we have come up with a few tricks to make life easier

around the house, for instance half doors, and using plumbers pipe to hang our living room

drapes so Marcel cant pull the drapes off the wall. And we dont have any lower lamps in

the house, everything is up out of his reach. Im just curious what creative things y'all have

come up with =)

Okay for Halloween I'll have

Cindy's picture

Okay for Halloween I'll have my husband temporarily remove the screen off our kitchen window which is
at the front of the house facing the street. That way I can hand candy out through the window rather than
opening the front door & risk Marcel or Elsie running out. LAST YEAR a kid came up to my window and ordered
a cheese burger lol.

We always pulled the screen

Perseverence's picture

We always pulled the screen out of the top half of the "screen door" (storm door?) and handed out candy through the opening. I don't know whether you have them where you are. Up here, most houses have two doors mounted together (or one right behind the other). In the summer, usually we leave the inside door open to let the air circulate through the screen and still keep the bugs out. In the winter, the screen is replaced by glass, so it acts as a bit of extra "insulation" against the cold. For Halloween now, the residents all bring candy to the community hall and the kids go there for a community party instead of going door to door.

Yes storm doors are common

Cindy's picture

Yes storm doors are common in cold climates in the U.S. And I believe the area between doors would
be called a mud room here, not sure about that one.

I think they might be

Perseverence's picture

I think they might be something different, then. The two doors I'm talking about (outer and inner) are almost mounted on the same door frame. The space between them might be four inches when they're both closed.

Well thats definately not a

Well thats definately not a mud room. In any case its a good idea.

My church has trick or trunk

Cindy's picture

My church has trick or trunk (we've never gone but I heard about it) where people will decorate the trunks
of their car for Halloween & park in the church parking lot =)

You know, I just saw a trick

You know, I just saw a trick or trunk sign at a downtown church here.

LOL they musta STOLE It from the Mormons lol =)~~~ Ah Im just jokin.' By the way the Baptists branched
off from the Mormon church. I was researching one time and found that out.

I've heard about those trunk

WyattsMom's picture

I've heard about those trunk parties but I don't think they are popular here in So Cal. Here little kids go to the malls and the stores hand out candy. And people still go door to door.

Some of the autism Moms here are putting on a party in the park. I'm going to be in charge of renting a helium tank and doing up the balloons since I used to help out in a balloon shop way back when. I hope we get a nice sized but manageable group.

Nicole you can save some

Cindy's picture

Nicole you can save some money by buying a small helium tank that comes with balloons and ribbon,
really youll have plenty & it will save some dough, I dont know how much those tanks rent for.

The kits that you're talking

WyattsMom's picture

The kits that you're talking about run approx $30, I think. It's the same to rent a tank that will fill 2x as many balloons, but you still have to buy the balloons and ribbon. So it just depends on how many balloons you want. I think I'm going to want to get orange and white balloons. I would say orange and black but I thought orange seemed more innocent and then I can get yellow ribbon which will be kind of candy corn colors. Also, you can use yellow ribbon for virtually any holiday if I have leftover. Also, I thought the bigger tank (not the biggest, just the medium size) would be fun for Wyatt. The tank rental is good for a week. His birthday is in November. Instead of a big party this year I wanted to rent a helium tank and let him go to town. So, I'll just let him have his balloon celebration a little bit early.

We used to get Marcel

Cindy's picture

We used to get Marcel balloons until he almost swallowed one that popped. I would get him mylar only
they drive Elsie nuts. She was so good when the parametics were here. She stayed close by but out of
the way, keeping a close eye. The parametics told me afterwards she made them a little nervous when
they first walked in even though I told them she wouldnt bite. I couldnt get her to leave Marcels side.
I know I brag about her but shes just so loving and what a watch dog! Shes also discovered that mommy
keeps a nice ice cold pitcher of water next to the bed (and she has her bowl in the room) so when its
low she'll nudge the pitcher and then bark just enough to let me know she'd sure like some of that ice
cold water lol. She's also good for comic relief =)

Wyatt has been putting more

WyattsMom's picture

Wyatt has been putting more toys in his mouth lately. But, knock on wood, he hasn't choked on anything ever. He has a really strong gag reflex which is why it is SO difficult to get him to take medications. After finding a little splinter of plastic in his BM last week, I got rid of the cheap plastic toy that was gnawed on. Some toy car/bike/motorcycle things have wheels that come apart, for instance the rubber ring that is a tire comes off and also spindly fenders and things like that can splinter off and I'm sure they are quite tasty. So, I'm better off at this point sticking with Fisher-Price Little People and their equivalents from Playskool, Step2, Duplo etc.

WEll, in the school setting,

AutismClassroom.com's picture

WEll, in the school setting, I have been know to place a LONG velcro strip in the doorjam of the classroom closet. This made it hard for my students to open the closet and get the goodies inside. For those that were strong enough, it just gve use a little more time to get over to them and redirect them.

Is the sticky back

WyattsMom's picture

Is the sticky back sufficient to keep the Velcro in place? Do you use both sides or just one side? If it is just one side, is it the fuzzy side or the other side that works best?

Well, I was feeling pretty

WyattsMom's picture

Well, I was feeling pretty bummed out about gradually having to get rid of a lot of breakables and other decor. I just gave a big box of pottery and glassware to my Mom. Some of my shelves are pretty bare, except for the really high up ones and those are crowded with everything.

But then yesterday a friend of mine gave me a thick rug shaped and woven to look somewhat like a skinned tiger. She and my husband both think it is hideous. She got it as a gift and it has an $80 price tag on it--she had it outside her house in a pile. She was going to donate it to charity, but I rescued it. But I'm thrilled with it and I got compliments from all of the tutors. At least it is a decorative relief from the stark monotony of my house. And today I am happily daydreaming about all of the color and texture that I can add to the house through textiles. Yes, sure, those can be ruined if they aren't washable, but I'll just have to be creative. I got to thinking about all the money that is wasted on nick-knacks, a few dollars here and there, so I think I could justify spending a larger chunk of money on rugs and maybe some vinyl/waterproof pillows with washable slip covers.

When my son was young, my decorating style could only be described as "Early Vacant" - now, it's "Persistent Clutter." My son and husband are both pack rats and I've run out of places to put things away. My "trick" was just to stop letting it bother me; that is, I became somewhat of a lousy housekeeper. I do especially like getting invites to other people's homes, since it gives me a "taste" every now and then of what I had "planned" my home and life to be like - lol. Honestly, though, I would never trade either my husband or my son for the perfect home. I'd rather have them in my life than a bunch of "nice" stuff any day!

That is so true, you have to

WyattsMom's picture

That is so true, you have to not let it bother you, whether it is Early Vacant, Destructive Offspring, or Persistent Clutter, we've all got to learn to go with the flow of our lifestyles.

Hey Nicole, Last year I gave

Cindy's picture

Hey Nicole, Last year I gave away an antique dresser that I literally had my entire life.... it had three mirrors
that were EXTREMELY heavy & Marcel was climbing up on things. I couldnt take the chance that the dresser
would fall on him so I gave it to a woman at church. Believe it or not before long youll forget you even had
most of that stuff.

Atta girl lol. By the way

Atta girl lol. By the way I've also actually glued breakables (like small lamps) in place because Marcel has a habit
of throwing things.
